This week: Truck visa processing resumes under stricter rules; Gulf shipping risk remains elevated; Chicago flight cuts tighten air cargo capacity.
Current Critical Industry Trends
The U.S. State Department has resumed processing commercial truck driver visa applications under stricter review standards. These new standards arrived following eight months of auditing states on their CDL distribution methods.
Ocean
U.S. Central Command has intercepted a small containership suspected of attempting to breach the blockade of Iran. Since the blockade began, more than 39 vessels have been redirected away from Iranian ports.
Ports
The Jones Act Waiver has been extended for 90 days, beginning May 18. Volatile markets and global uncertainty are among the key reasons for the extension.
The Port of Barcelona showcased its Fifth Strategic Plan for 2026-2030, with a120-initiative roadmap. The plan aims to transform the port into an economic and social driver for Catalonia.
International
India and New Zealand have signed a free trade agreement centered on deepening economic ties and expanding market access between the two countries. The deal has been called a “once-in-a-generation" opportunity.
Canada has announced a sovereign wealth fund with a key goal being economic independence from the United States. Major infrastructure projects like ports and pipelines are part of key investments Canada intends to use the fund for.
Trucking
Benchmark diesel prices have declined for the third consecutive week. Despite this, oil prices may stay at this new benchmark as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
Rail
The Alameda Belt Line has been recommended to provide switching services at the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach, strengthening connectivity between port terminals and the national rail network.
Intermodal volumes rose 2.3% year-over-year in March, reflecting continued resilience in rail-linked freight flows despite broader market uncertainty.
Air
The FAA has reduced daily flights at Chicago O’Hare. The Air forwarders Association (AfA) has voiced concerns of constrained air cargo capacity and increased delays.
Technology
AI and digitalization are increasingly being used to enhance seafarer safety, enabling faster access to onboard risk and operational data with reduced manual intervention.
Other
Equipment demand remains strong despite economic uncertainty, with new business volume up 18.6% year-to-date and 12.5% year-over-year in March.
