Adcom's Freight Market Update: December 30, 2025

This week: China will cut tariffs next year; New legislation targets freight broker safety practices; “Elbows Up” became a boycott slogan in 2025.

Ocean

CMA CGM has revised the port rotation of its India–Mediterranean Medex service. The move is aimed at improving operational efficiency and schedule reliability as Red Sea uncertainty continues to influence global liner networks.

International

China will cut tariffs on select imports starting next year. The changes include battery-related materials and certain medical products, with lower provisional rates applied to hundreds of items.

Trucking

New legislation targets freight broker safety practices. The proposal would impose a 10% surcharge when brokers contract with carriers that have repeated DOT safety violations.

Air

The extraordinary moved in 2025. From complex machinery to wildlife and medical cargo, each shipment required specialized planning and control. The work shows where air cargo delivers unmatched reliability.

Air cargo enters 2026 navigating overlapping global risks. With policy fragmentation to cyber threats and climate volatility, IATA warns that air freight networks will face complex pressure points. Adapting to these disruptions is now mission-critical for logistics resilience.

Other

“Elbows Up” became more than a hockey phrase in 2025. Sparked by U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, the movement fueled boycotts of U.S. alcohol, travel, and products, contributing to declines in U.S. exports and tourism revenue.

Cargo theft risks remain elevated during peak season. A $400,000 shipment of live lobsters went missing en route from Massachusetts to Midwest distribution points, prompting an FBI investigation. Industry data shows organized theft rings continue to drive significant losses across U.S. trucking.
